License Plate Renewals
License Plate Renewals can be processed either online, in person at our office, or by mail. The cost of renewal is the same for all three methods of renewal.
Online License Plate Renewals
NOTE: The online service is only for private passenger vehicles or light commercial vehicles, with a GVW of not more than 4500 kg. The maximum per vehicle renewal fee allowed for the online transaction is $100.00 per vehicle. For renewal fees greater than $100 per vehicle you must renew in person.
NOTE: The maximum renewal term available for online renewals is one year.
In order to renew online you will need the following:
• Your vehicle license plate number.
• A valid insurance pink card which is proof of insurance coverage.
• Your insurance must provide public liability and property damage coverage under an owner’s automobile insurance policy as provided for in the Alberta Insurance Act.
• It is an offense punishable by law to apply for or obtain registration of a motor vehicle when it is not insured or to operate an uninsured motor vehicle.
• A valid VISA or MasterCard
Caution
• Allow at least 10 days for registrations and tabs to reach you by mail. If you are processing this renewal within 10 days of expiry, you may not receive your new registration and tabs before the end of the month.
• It is your responsibility to allow sufficient time for mail delivery.
• Do not renew your vehicle online if your mailing address has changed, otherwise your documents may be sent to the wrong address.
Renew In Person
If coming in person please confirm our office hours prior to coming in. To avoid lineups plan to come at a time other than the beginning or end of the month.
Requirements:
In order to renew your vehicle registration in person you will need the following:
* A valid insurance pink card which is proof of insurance.
* Payment must be made by cheque, debit card, or cash. (Credit card payments are only accepted for online transactions)
Renew By Mail
If there are any changes such as address change, vehicle change, or license plate class change, the renewal may not be done by mail.
If mailing your renewal we must receive your documents a minimum of 10 business prior to the end of the renewal month to insure that your tabs to arrive before the end of the expiry month. The insurance disclosure on the back of the renewal document must be completed or the renewal will not be processed and will not be returned.
You can mail your renewal documents to us along with a personal cheque for the full amount as stated on the renewal document made payable to Norsen Management Inc.

License Plate Renewals For Private Passenger Vehicles
Private passenger license plates in Alberta are normally renewed for a 12 month period. You will receive a renewal notice from Alberta Registries via Canada Post approximately 4 to 6 weeks prior to your expiry date. Bring your renewal notice to our office for processing and you will receive the new plate sticker at that time. If you have lost the renewal notice we are still able to renew your license plates in person only.
Private passenger vehicles may be renewed for up to 30 months at your option in person only. The cost will vary accordingly.
Commercial Plate Renewals
Commercial vehicle license plates in Alberta are only issued for a maximum 12 month period.
Fees vary by weight and the class of vehicle. The fees will be listed on your renewal notice.
Antique Vehicle Registration
A vehicle must be over 25 years old to qualify for antique plates. Regardless of the age of the vehicle, an antique plate is not for regular or everyday use such as driving to work or on vacation. Antique license plates are intended for vehicles that are only operated in connection with car shows, car meets, car rallies, parades, and other official car club functions.
Fee = $39.45 (incl gst)
This is a one time fee and does not renew annually.
Original license plates, with the year stamped in the plate, from the same year as the make of the vehicle, may be registered to the vehicle.
Canceling A Registration
To cancel your license plates and registration, you must visit a registry agent office. You will be required to surrender your registration, plates and stickers as well as provide identification verifying that you are the registrant. The prorated unused portion of the original registration fee (if any) will be refunded by mail minus a $10.00 Alberta Registry administrative processing fee. You will also be charged a $9.45 (incl gst) agent service fee.
Change of Address
If you change your address, you are required by law to update the address information on your driver’s license and vehicle registration within 14 days.
Important
When you change the address on your driver’s license all vehicles registered to your name will automatically, and without charge, have the address changed on your registration documents and new documents will be mailed to your new address.
Vehicles Registered To a Company Name
If a vehicle is registered to any name other than your personal name and the address of the Company changes then a vehicle registration address change must be made.
All address changes can only be made in person.

Commercial Vehicle Registration
If a motor vehicle is used for any purpose other than personal use, which includes pleasure and to and from work, a commercial license plate will be required. There are a number of different commercial plates based on use of vehicle, passenger capacity, territory of use, and gross vehicle weight (GVW) of the vehicle. Our staff will be able to identify the commercial class of license plate that you require based on the above factors.
You are required to provide us with the estimated GVW of your vehicle. The GVW includes the curb weight (vehicle when empty) plus fuel, passengers, cargo, and trailer tongue weight.
Important Notes For All Commercial Vehicles With A GVW Over 11,794 KG Or Passenger Capacity Of 11 Or More Including The Driver
If the vehicle is over 11,794 kg or has a passenger capacity of 11 or more including the driver, you will be required to obtain a Safety Fitness Certificate and a Commercial Vehicle Inspection.
Safety Fitness Certificate
To obtain a Safety Fitness Certificate you must first register the vehicle and we will issue a temporary 60 day Safety Fitness Certificate. We will provide you with an Application for a Safety Fitness Certificate, which must be completed and sent to Alberta Transportation, who reviews the application and issues the permanent certificate.
Commercial Vehicle Inspection
Completion of a Commercial Vehicle Inspection is required as part of the process to obtain the Safety Fitness Certificate. The Commercial Vehicle Inspection must be completed by an approved inspection facility. The approved facilities stock all necessary forms, and they will notify Alberta Transportation directly when the inspection has been completed.
Disabled Parking Placards
A parking placard enables those with the greatest needs to use specially designated parking facilities. The placards are issued to individuals who provide proof of eligibility under this program.
To apply for a placard, an application form must be completed by your physician, physiotherapist or occupational therapist and submitted to our office.
To qualify, an individual must be unable to walk more than 50 metres.
There are three types of placards:
Blue placards, which can be issued to those with long-term disabilities and are valid for five years
Blue placards, which can be issued to those with Permanent disabilities that can be self-declared every five years without the medical personnel signature
Red placards, which can be issued to those with disabilities that are temporary in nature, but will affect them for a period of three to twelve months (Note: A visitor in need may use their valid (non-expired) parking placard from their home jurisdiction during their vacation or visit to Alberta.)
A visitor in need, without an existing placard, may apply for a temporary red placard for the duration of their visit. Visitors will be considered for a parking placard and should contact our office for more information.

Fine Payments
Overdue Fines – (Pay By Phone)
If you have not dealt with it by the due date on the summons, you may be convicted in absence. The overdue fine will then be transferred to the Motor Vehicles database where a late penalty charge will be added. This outstanding fine must be paid before any motor vehicle service can be performed for you. The ticket numbers are not required when paying overdue fines.

Current Fines – (Scan and Upload)
A current fine is a ticket you have received and the due date is more than two days in the future. Payment must be received at least two days before the final due date on the ticket.
First we must receive a copy of the ticket(s) before we can accept your payment.

Intransit Permits
You can move an unregistered vehicle from one location to another inside Alberta or to another Province, however, you must first provide proof of ownership, proof of valid insurance, and a description of the vehicle including the make, year and serial number.
Inside Alberta a permit can be issued for the following reasons and lengths of time:
1. Move from point A to point B. – 3 days.
2. Inspection purposes. – 7 days.
3. Mechanical servicing. – 7 days.
4. Demonstration for the purpose of selling. – 7 days.
Outside Alberta
1. Move from point A to point B. – 7 days.
For this service you must visit our office in person.

Out of Province Inspections
All vehicles that have not been previously registered in Alberta must first complete an Out of Province Vehicle Inspection.
There are several Approved Inspection Locations in Alberta. The inspection facility will stock the required form. The cost of the inspection varies depending of the individual location.
If the vehicle has a GVW over 11,794 kg it is exempt from requiring the the of Province Inspection, however a Commercial Vehicle Inspection will be required. Refer to the Commercial Vehicle Registration section of this website.

Personalized Plates
Personalized plates are custom ordered and take from four to six weeks from the date ordered to receive the plates.
Personalized plates my be used on vehicles registered as private passenger or commercial use vehicles such as cars, SUVs, pick ups, vans, and motor homes.
This service is only provided in person.
You may purchase personalized plates for someone as a gift. To do this we simply require that person’s name and date of birth, and they must already have a vehicle registered to their name in the province of Alberta.
The plates can be mailed directly to the registered owner of to our office and we will notify you for pick up. Once the plates are received the registered owner must turn in the existing plates and pay an exchange fee.
One Time Personalized Plate Fee = $220.50 (incl gst)
One Time Exchange Fee = $22.45 (incl gst)
ProRate
All ProRate Permits are must be approved by Alberta Transportation Permits & ProRate, before we are able to issue any documents.
You must submit all required information to Alberta Transportation first then visit our office in person and present your MVID number, Fleet number, and Supplement number.
We will confirm your ProRate Status online, and once confirmed we will process and issue the required documents.
ProRate Fees are determined by Alberta Transportation and must be paid in our office in order to receive your documents.

Residency Requirements
If you are a new resident to Alberta, or a temporary resident in Alberta you should become familiar with the residency rules and requirements as related to motor vehicle registration in the Province of Alberta.

Salvage Inspections
If a motor vehicle has been written off as salvage it cannot be registered in the Province of Alberta unless it has been completely repaired and passed a Salvage Inspection.

Transferring A Registration
To transfer your existing vehicle registration to another vehicle, you must visit our office in person. You will need to provide acceptable identification, proof of ownership for the vehicle you are transferring the registration to, and proof of valid insurance for the vehicle.
In addition to the above requirements, if the vehicle was purchased from outside Alberta, the vehicle must be physically in Alberta and have either an out-of-province inspection, a salvage inspection or a commercial vehicle inspection. One of our Agents will review the documentation and provide you with the appropriate inspection request form that you must take to a licenced inspection facility.
Vehicles that are exempt from obtaining an inspection include off-highway vehicles, prorated vehicles and trailers. Other exemptions that may be available; dealer owned demonstrator vehicles, new vehicles from a jurisdiction within Canada (including Alberta), used vehicles from a jurisdiction within Canada (including Alberta) and new vehicles from a jurisdiction outside Canada. Each of these exemptions has their own requirements that must be met in order to qualify. One of our agents can assist you in determining if you fall into one of these categories.

Vehicle History Report
We provide two different vehicle history reports. The Alberta Vehicle Information Report and the Canada Wide Vehicle Information Report (CarProof). These reports may be obtained in person at our office or online. VISA or Master Card are accepted for online orders only. The reports can be sent to you via email, fax, or mail.
Alberta Vehicle Information Report
A Vehicle Information Report (VIR) provides information about a vehicle’s registration history in Alberta only. The report is produced using the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). A VIN is the unique serial number assigned to every vehicle by the manufacturer or the Insurance Bureau of Canada’s assigned VIN program. An accurate and complete VIN must be provided to complete a VIR request.
The information contained in the VIR includes:
- The date and time of the report
- Vehicle description – year, make, model, style, colour, fuel type, odometer reading if available
- Vehicle status – active, salvage, non-repairable, unsafe, rebuilt, etc.
- Vehicle registration – date vehicle first entered on system, licence plate classification, registration history date and location (no personal information for any current or previous owner is shown, including licence plate numbers)
- Lien information – provides the number of liens and other related instruments which are registered in the province of Alberta and associated with the serial number (detailed information, such as the secured party and the party to whom the money is owed, can be determined by purchasing a separate Personal Property lien search)
The VIR ONLY shows information from the Alberta Motor Vehicle System. It does not include any information from other provinces or countries where the vehicle may have been registered.

Canada Wide Vehicle Information Report (CarProof)
You may order this search online (using a VISA or MasterCard) or come to our office in person.
Before you buy your next used vehicle you may want to know the history of the vehicle, including odometer record, registration history, claims history and lien registrations. Dealing with these issues after a purchase can be extremely costly and take much of your valuable time.
We offer CarProof, the most comprehensive vehicle history available accross Canada and the United States.
There are three basic levels of CarProof reports.

This search provides a Canada Wide Lien Search for automobiles. All that is required from you is the vehicle year, make, model, and serial number.

Vehicle Seizures
If a vehicle has been seized and the registered owner’s license is not under suspension, then the registered owner may apply for an early release of the seized vehicle.
To do this the registered owner must purchase and submit an Application For An Early Release to Alberta Transportation. These applications are available in our office and may be obtained in person only during regular office hours.
You may make an application to be heard in person or you may make a written application.
Application For A Personal Hearing – Fee = $276.25 (incl gst)
With this application you are requesting an in person hearing with Alberta Transportation, to explain why you deserve and are in need of an early release.
Application For A Non-Personal Hearing – Fee = $151.25 (incl gst)
With this application you are explaining your reasons for requesting an early release in the application, and mailing or delivering the application to Alberta Transportation.
NOTE: Neither of the above Applications will guarantee an early release of your vehicle and the application fees are not refundable under any circumstances.

Veterans Plates
All Canadian Forces Veterans qualify for Alberta Veterans License Plates.
Currently serving armed forces members also qualify provided they have served a minimum of three years.
To apply go to the AB/NWT Legion Command link and follow the instructions.
Once you have received your approved application bring the application to our office and we will issue your Veteran’s Plate immediately.
Plate Replacement Fee = $22.45 (incl gst)
If you replace your plate and pay for your next renewal at the same time the Replacement Fee is waived.
